Installation Procedure for Switchvox Free Edition

Switchvox Free Edition is a software package that includes everything you need to turn a computer into an IP phone system. It includes Fedora Core 6 Linux, the open source Asterisk PBX software, plus all the software necessary to make Switchvox such a revolutionary communications solution. Switchvox Free Edition is ideal for testing or trial purposes, but for installations to be used in a production environment, we recommend the tested, warranted, and supported Switchvox solutions, SOHO or SMB.

About This Guide

This guide was created to provide very basic, step-by-step instructions through the process of downloading and installing Switchvox Free Edition onto a server for testing or trial purposes only.

Before You Begin

It is highly recommended that the computer you select to install Switchvox Free Edition on is one of our certified systems, listed at here. This will ensure that you can upgrade your system from Free Edition to a supported version of Switchvox (SOHO or SMB). Note that any existing operating systems or data will be removed by the Switchvox installation process.

Installation Procedure

  1. Download the Switchvox Free Edition ISO file, and create a CD image from the file, which is required before installation can begin. The process for burning a CD image will vary depending upon the CD authoring software you are using.
  2. Insert your newly created Switchvox Free Edition CD into the CD-ROM drive of the PC.
  3. Boot from the CD by restarting the PC. To begin the installation, simply press <Enter> when the first prompt appears.
  4. From here, follow the self-explanatory on-screen prompts to guide you through the installation process.
  5. When the installation is complete, the system will prompt you to reboot. After rebooting, a URL will be displayed. This is the web address you will type into the web browser of your everyday computer to access the administration GUI.

Installation Notes

  • Most of the installation procedure is automatic, but you will need to provide the system with information including your time zone and network configuration information. If you are unsure about the network settings, ask your system administrator. The default username is "admin" and the password is "admin".

Registration Process (Registration is FREE for the FREE edition)

In order to create more than 3 phone extensions, you will need to register your Switchvox system. Switchvox Free Edition supports up to 15 phone or virtual extensions; if you require more than 15 extensions, upgrades to Switchvox SOHO or SMB may be purchased at switchvox.com.

  1. To register, click the blinking link at the top of the administration GUI that says "System is not registered."
  2. Complete the form.
  3. When you submit the form, an email with a registration code will be emailed to you. Type the code into the registration page.

Documentation & Support

  • More documentation can be found in the Customer Center at switchvox.com. Please note that support from Switchvox technical support is available only to Switchvox SOHO or SMB users.
